Confusion, hard work and a cafe

July 21, 2008

There’s 2 reasons I haven’t posted in over a month, and 1 reason I now am again. Firstly I got really really busy, busier than maybe for 10 years, which reminded me just how busy most people are. And being too busy makes it really hard to work for inter-faith understanding. Secondly, I’ve been trying to find answers to some major interfaith conflicts and got more and more confused by all the viewpoints. Where can you find some balanced reporting on the Middle-East for example. Very frustrating and confusing.

But then I saw some episodes of “Salam Cafe”, (a TV production by some seriously funny Muslims in Australia), including one where they humourously criticise unhealthy aspects of fundamentalism in Islam, one where they have a Jew, a Muslim, and a Christian on a “game show”, and another where they interview a Christian leader. All very funny! And somehow very hopeful. Check out http://www.sbs.com.au/salamcafe/

A sample answer from the “game show”: “See, how smart are Muslims- we invented al-gebra, al-chemy, al-cohol, but we can’t drink that, and Al-Gore.”

Balanced reporting – that’s a very difficult idea, in fact impossible. Every report has a point of view. I think that “honest” and “moderate” reporting are much more achievable. The only way to achieve balance is by reading material from lots of different sources.
